Media Statement re: President Donald Trump’s Executive Orders Supporting the Coal Industry and Grid Reliability and Security

April 8, 2025

HARRISBURG, PA – The Pennsylvania Coal Alliance and its members applaud President Trump’s executive orders signed today that will reinvigorate America’s coal industry, promote grid reliability and ensure national security.

Pennsylvania coal is a driving force that powers our economy and sustains the quality of lives of our residents, yet misguided policies from previous administrations and irresponsible state policies have intensified power shortages across the nation and weakened domestic manufacturing.

“We are nearing the height of a reliability crisis, and today’s executive orders, coupled with EPA’s efforts to revisit irresponsible policies that pick winners and losers and would further exacerbate power shortages across the nation, is an overdue directive that will help address grid reliability and national security,” said Rachel Gleason, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Coal Alliance.

Experts from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, regional grid managers and utilities have warned our grid is facing an impending crisis, which in Pennsylvania could culminate as early as 2026. “Supply and demand are accelerating at an unpredictable and unprecedented pace, and we are in the midst of needing to add massive amounts of baseload, reliable energy to the grid at a scale that is more than double the megawatts of announced fossil fuels retirements,” said Gleason.
