The Pennsylvania Coal Alliance (PCA) today announced the winners of its annual mine safety and reclamation awards, recognizing companies across the Commonwealth for outstanding safety records and exemplary efforts to reclaim and restore coal mine lands.
The Keystone Mine Safety and Reclamation Awards were presented by Pennsylvania Representatives Jim Struzzi and Dallas Kephart and recognize the Pennsylvania coal industry’s commitment to protect its workforce while responsibly managing and restoring mine sites for future generations.
“Pennsylvania’s coal industry continues to demonstrate that safety and environmental stewardship are fundamental to responsible mining,” said Representative Struzzi. “These award winners represent the best of the industry, from achieving exceptional employee safety records to restoring lands and waterways impacted by legacy mining.”

2026 Reclamation Award Winners
PCA’s reclamation awards, presented by Representatives Dallas Kephart and Carl Metzgar recognize exceptional work to restore land and improve environmental conditions associated with current and historic mining. Each project is scored based on several categories, including the number of acres previously affected by AML, the number of acres mined, and post-mining land use.
“Reclamation is an important part of Pennsylvania’s mining legacy,” said Representative Kephart. “These projects show what can be accomplished when today’s mining operations apply modern standards and technology to restore land, improve water quality and create opportunities for productive future uses.”
Best Overall Project
RES Coal, LLC – Shaw #2
RES Coal, LLC received the Best Overall Project Award for outstanding reclamation work at its Shaw #2 site, a project that represents more than a decade of work to address the environmental impacts of historic mining.
Over the life of the operation, RES Coal reclaimed 73 acres of abandoned mine spoils, daylighted and eliminated 202 acres of legacy abandoned deep mines, reclaimed nearly 9000 linear feet of abandoned highwalls, extended a public water line to the town of Croft and significantly improved Surveyor Run, a tributary of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
RES Coal was issued its Shaw #2 mining permit in December 2011 to remine a site affected by decades of legacy mining. Mining was completed in 2024, with final planting completed in July 2025. The reclaimed land demonstrates how the stewardship of remining in Pennsylvania can address the scars of historic mining by returning the land to its natural state with productive and beneficial uses.
Somerset County Reclamation Award
Simkol Corp. – Lepley Mine
Simkol Corp. received the Somerset County Reclamation Award for outstanding reclamation of an abandoned highwall and the open entry to an abandoned country bank deep mine.
The project returned the land to beneficial uses, including cropland and wildlife habitat, while addressing hazards associated with historic mining.
